The Bills coaching staff and front office are likely satisfied with how the team has looked at OTA’s and the two days of minicamp they had, and the chance for severe thunderstorms this afternoon likely contributed to the decision.
The Bills are the odds-on favorite to win the Super Bowl heading into the 2022 season and it’s because of the incredible roster that general manager Brandon Beane has put together.
The Bills return the number one ranked defense in the NFL from last year, as well as a top five offense from 2021.
While most of the starters and immediate backups are set heading into training camp at the end of July, there are a few to keep an eye out for.
The biggest one has to be the number two cornerback job.
It’s a battle between third-year cornerback Dane Jackson and 2022 first-round pick, Kaiir Elam.
Elam likely has the edge since he has impressed in off-season workouts and the Bills did invest a first round pick into him. However, as McDermott has pointed out, camp is an opportunity for everyone to prove themselves.
Jackson has been good for the Bills.
The former 7th round pick has earned a job on the team and will be a factor for the Bills in 2022, either as the CB2 or CB4. I saw CB4 because Taron Johnson is locked in as the nickel cornerback.
Another position battle will be at running back.
The Bills starter right now is Devin Singletary. They also drafted Georgia running back James Cook in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft. Cook figures to be a factor in the passing game.
Zack Moss is also still here, but the Bills signed veteran Duke Johnson this spring, so Moss will likely have his work cut out to make the team.
Tight end is also interesting. Obviously, Dawson Knox will be the starter and free agent signing OJ Howard will be the backup and second TE, but undrafted free agent Jalen Wydermyer will absolutely compete with Tommy Sweeney as the third tight end.
Quintin Morris is also in the mix, but he will likely not make the 53-man roster. He could be saved on the practice squad.
It should be a lot of fun to see how the Bills position battles shake out in training camp.
