Dads get free entry to Twycross Zoo to celebrate Father’s Day – along with the resident apes

Dads will be able to enjoy a free day out at Twycross Zoo this weekend. The Leicestershire attraction is celebrating Father’s Day with its family of awesome apes, and is running two special offers for visitors.

Twycross is the only zoo in the UK, and one of only four worldwide, to house all four great apes – gorillas, orangutans, chimpanzees and bonobos. This Father’s Day weekend, June 18 and 19, it is celebrating the unique fatherly bonds of two of its most popular inhabitants, Batu, a Bornean orang utan, and Oumbi, a Western lowland gorilla.

Batu, aged 33, has seven offspring, including four-year-old female Kayan and five-year old male Basuki who live with him at Twycross. His other children include Molly (aged 11), Tiga (aged 20), Miri (aged 17), Tamu (aged 17) and Satu (aged 22) who now live in zoos across Europe – from Wingham Wildlife Park and Colchester Zoo in the UK to Rostock Zoo in Germany and Ménagerie le Zoo du Jardin des Plantes in France.

Oumbi, aged 29, also shares his habitat at Twycross with two of his children – nine-year-old male Lope and five-year-old male Shufai. Both Bornean orang utans and Western lowland gorillas are classified as Critically Endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

As a conservation charity, Twycross Zoo’s primary purpose is to preserve and protect the species. Its involvement in international breeding programs to support the growth and future prosperity of family groups such as Batu’s and Oumbi’s, is critical to the race to protect vulnerable species for future generations.

Dr Rebecca Biddle, Director of Conservation at Twycross Zoo, said: “We are delighted to celebrate our awesome animal dads this Father’s Day. All great apes share unique familial bonds and it’s been wonderful to see our orangutan and gorilla groups continue to thrive here at Twycross.

“It’s thanks to super dads such as Batu and Oumbi that we’ve seen such great success with our breeding programmes, which are so important in helping to protect and preserve critically endangered species across the globe. Every family who visits us this Father’s Day weekend will have the chance to see these incredible species and, at the same time, support our vital conservation work to protect them.”

Families looking to treat their own super dads this weekend can take advantage of two Father’s Day offers. Dads go free on Sunday, June 19, alongside a full-price adult, child or concession online ticket.

Or, you can capture the memories of your visit to Twycross Zoo with a free family photo when you buy a special package ticket of four people for £75 online. This offer is valid on Saturday June 18 and Sunday June 19, with only 150 package tickets available for each date.

Twycross Zoo Members are also included in the special offers and are entitled to bring one free dad on presentation of a valid membership card. Tickets can be booked online via the zoo’s website.
