The Bloomfield native, who now lives in MAF, says he can’t wait to get the full experience at the prestigious Madonna di Campiglio event in northern Italy, in July.
“I can’t wait to go, I’m buzzing to be picked,” he said, “I just love fishing. I’ve been doing it for six years, ever since Grandpa John first took me out.”
“He has always been interested in fly fishing and I have enjoyed doing it with him. I started in lakes but now I am on rivers and doing different types of fishing but it was my grandfather who got me into fishing which is my best hobby.
“It’s certainly not a bad pastime when Ireland is called to hunt in Italy. When I got a phone call from Danny (English) he asked if I would be interested in doing it and I told him for sure. To be honest I couldn’t believe it.”
Under the guidance of Damien Devine and coach of FROG (Foyle River Catchment Outdoor Group CIC), Wilson really shined, competing and winning many of the competitions run by FROG which means he now gets a chance to compete on the world stage.
As a long-term member of the Dennett Anglers Association, Damien became the first Derry youth to represent TAFI Ireland at the World Championships and will travel to Wicklow later this month to meet the team for some practice.
“You wouldn’t even think about it, but there’s a lot of training involved and I’ll be going to Wicklow in a few weeks,” he added, “The whole Ireland team is getting together down there and we’re going out fishing in one of the rivers at Rathdrum.”
A GoFundMe page was created to help Damien offset the cost of travel and accommodation for his trip to Italy.
