ALBANI – Hunting licenses, traps and deer management permits are now on sale for the 2022-2023 season.
Conservation Ministry officials said in a press release that the expanded fishing opportunities offered last year are also available to fishermen this year.
Licenses and permits can be purchased online, from licensing agents, or by phone at (866) 933-2257. The new hunting and fishing licenses are valid from September 1, 2022 until August 31, 2023.
Annual fishing licenses are valid for 365 days from the date of purchase.
DEC officials said purchasing a hunting, fishing or hunting license helps support DEC’s conservation projects and ensures the future of natural resources for future generations.
The Dubai Economic Center also encourages outdoor enthusiasts to consider purchasing a home and access stamps annually. Funds from $5 to support stamp projects to conserve habitats and improve public access to activities related to fish and wildlife.
This year’s Habitat and Access Stamps feature a red letter, a small eastern newt.
Extended call center hours
Starting this week and running through November 30, the DEC call center can be reached from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays, and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays. Regular business hours at the call center will resume on weekdays on December 1.
Individuals must have the following items ready when purchasing a license:
n full contact information, including name, address, email address and phone number);
n DEC customer identification number (if any);
n In the case of a purchase by phone or the Internet, a valid credit card.
If not already entered into the DEC’s automated licensing system, people are required to provide proof of a hunter’s or hunter’s education certificate or a copy of previous licensing for all hunting and trap license purchases. Deer management permits, the markings issued by deer without pods, are available at all licensing outlets, by phone, or online until October 1.
Permits are used to manage deer herds and are issued through an immediate random selection process at the point of sale.
DEC officials said the chances of obtaining a DMP remain the same throughout the application period. Hunters do not need to rush to apply.

Hunter Training Courses
All hunters, bow hunters, and first-time hunters must pass one or more courses before they can purchase a license.
Online and in-person courses are available.
Personal training sessions include a field day where new hunters can gain hands-on experience. All in-person courses are free, but space may be limited.
Courses fill up quickly, so participants are encouraged to register early. Visit the DEC website for more information, including a list of courses, registration instructions, and how to obtain study materials.
Requirements for obtaining a New York State angler’s education certification can also be met by completing the DEC’s online angler education course and passing the exam. Upon success, participants will receive a Fisherman Education Certificate to purchase a fishing license.
Participants must be residents of New York State. The cost of the course is $19.95. The online course can be accessed on the DEC website.
New York State also offers an online Pohunter Education Certificate course. Upon passing, hunters will receive a Bowhunter Education Certificate. Participants must be residents of New York State.

Additional fishing opportunities
The additional deer hunting opportunities that started last year will continue into 2022.
The special early season for Horned Deer runs from September 10-18, 2022, at selected Wildlife Management Units. Hunters 12 and 13 years old may pursue deer with a firearm or crossbow under the supervision of a licensed adult hunter in counties that participate in the program, and the new Deer Hunting game offers a second part of the late bow and muzzleloader season from December 26 – January 1 in the region Southern.
