Flyfishing Outfitters Gather to Celebrate Uncompahgre River – Pagosa Daily Post News Events & Video for Pagosa Springs Colorado

By Tanya Ishikawa

At this time of winter, when temperatures dip below freezing, minds can roam the white-sand beaches and blue ocean waters, or summer plans for warmer days on mountain rivers and lakes.

Two local fishing dealers are showing a way to escape to those destinations through movies and party, with all proceeds going toward projects that benefit the Uncompahgre River.

The RIGS Fly Shop in Ridgway and Telluride Angler celebrates all things fishing with a selection of short films from destinations around the world, all while raising awareness and funds to support projects on the Uncompahgre River Watershed. Ticket sales for the “A Benefit for the Uncompahgre River – 2022 Fly Fishing Film Tour” at the Ouray County 4H Event Center in Ridgway on Saturday, March 19 will fund the sustainable recreation efforts of the nonprofit Uncompahgre Watershed Partnership (UWP).

This feature will be critical to financing sustainable recreational planning and projects along the Uncombathager River. Donations and support from the local community are fundamental to the success of the UWP in obtaining grant funding,” said Dan Shehel, UWP Sustainable Recreation Coordinator.

Sponsors give away prizes, such as a Yeti cooler with custom arts and fishing gear, to win in a variety of ways at the event. Ouray Brewery donates beer, which will be sold to raise more money for watershed projects. Food will also be available.

“The Film Festival is going to be a fun event this year. We will have some great movies to watch and beer from Ouray Brewery. I am really excited about our auction item: a white Yeti Tundra 45 decorated with custom Em Yardley artwork!” added Shaheel.

The 16th annual Fly Fishing Film supports the national event’s tradition of shooting outdoor adventurers for the upcoming season. The 2022 movie collection features locations including Costa Rica, Maryland, Belize, Louisiana, Alabama, Australia, Columbia, Columbia and more. Audiences can witness the incredible energy of a cicada hole in action, follow a legendary spearfisher through the endless atolls of Belize, watch a mother pass her passion for fishing to the next generation, and explore the history of one of the world’s most legendary tarpons at Casa Mar.

In addition to the local sponsors, RIGS Fly Shop and Telluride Angler, national sponsors for the movie tour are Costa, Yeti, Simms Fishing, Trout Unlimited, Scientific Anglers, Ross and Abel Reels, Nokian Tires, Adipose Boatworks and Oskar Blues Brewing. The local beer sponsor is Ouray Brewery.

On March 19, doors open at 6 p.m. and movies begin at 6:30 p.m. Tickets $25 in advance online or $30 at the door. Ticket site here.
