The wooden beaches in our east are really coming to life, Wayne Hand of Honiton SAC found both Black Bream and Undulate Rays in this week’s session
Other reported fish among the mackerel are Gurnards, Black Bream, and early Trigger fish. I fished a local beach this week tried a few new rods with no success but a visiting fisherman fishing near me landed a nice surprise Tub Gurnard.
Totnes fisherman Tony White was hitting the shores in search of Bass and finding many eager to take his bait, he also tried his hand with some success for mullet in the Dart River, catching them on floating bread. Tom Stebbens and Will Booth of Brixham SAC traveled to South Wales in search of Tope from shore and had an excellent trip, with the fish weighing in at nearly 34 lbs.
Fishing on Ross Parham’s “Spot On” boat from Brixham, fishermen Alex Webb and Dave Percy caught Pollack and Codd respectively. Spot On will move to Plymouth for the tuna season starting soon.
Lyme Bay fishermen are now enjoying summer sports with more mackerel than they have in recent years, bringing in predators, such as Bass, with Tom Travers and James Trevett to find them this week.
The black bream is back and is supposed to give excellent sport until October. Wavy rays, Thornback rays, Smoothhounds, and Gurnards can also be targeted in the same area. Gordon Richard fished with Paul Millman on a private boat at Start Bay where they found Blonde Rice, Small Eyed Rice, Bliss and Turbot, with Gordon landing the best specimen of Red Gornard at about 1lb 12oz.
The Wyvern at Angling Trust holds a Junior Contest on the Mountbatten Plymouth Breakwater on Saturday 6th August Fishing takes place from 10am to 2pm Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.
