Tucked away in a scenic valley, Washoe Lake is a gem that locals and visitors alike can enjoy year-round. Offering views of the Sierra Nevada, Carson, and Virginia mountain ranges, the pristine lake offers a serene getaway in a vastly underrated corner of the Silver State.
Washoe Lake State Park encompasses the lake and is a popular destination for hiking, camping, picnicking, water sports, and horseback riding. It’s also beloved for birdwatching, as a diverse range of birds and waterfowl call the lake their home.
If you’re looking for a peaceful camping spot where there is plenty to do, you can’t do much better than Washoe Lake! The park consists of 49 campsites, each of which comes with a table, grill, and a fire ring. It’s open year-round and is available to campers on a first-come, first-served basis.
Located steps away from the shoreline, you’ll enjoy blissful views of the lake right from your tent or RV. The campground also contains two comfort stations (one with a shower), a group area for day and overnight use, and 24 sites with water and utility hook-ups.
If you’re an angler, don’t forget your fishing pole. Fish are plentiful in the lake, with channel catfish, bullhead catfish, wipers, white bass, and Sacramento Perch among the most popular catches.
Explore the lake and its surroundings on one of the park’s many hiking trails. Trails are available for both motorized and non-motorized uses. The American Discovery Trail, an epic multi-state trail that covers 500 miles of Nevada’s landscape, is also accessible from Washoe Lake State Park.
