Barbecue and stove deals

BioLite Firepit
Photo: BioLite

This is one of our favorite portable grills. Part grill, part fire pit, the BioLite features a built-in battery that can double as the phone charger in question. It burns wood and charcoal and holds up surprisingly small when you want to throw it in the trunk and hit the road.

the guard is The younger and more portable sibling to the Yukon, which we reviewed and liked. It is a small smokeless fire pit. If you don’t want the more travel-friendly Ranger, the Yukon is also on sale for $400 ($350).

I really love this solid and stale aluminum grill from PK Grills. It doesn’t have some Weber Kettle expansion capabilities, but it grills well, smokes well, and looks good. That’s a small discount, but we haven’t seen the price drop that much.

Eureka Ignite
Photo: REI

This used to be in our guide to the best camp stoves, but it wasn’t available most of the past year, so we removed it. Here again for sale at REI. It is a solid two-burner stove, but what sets it apart is the ability to connect a Jet Boil stove and use it as a third stove.

Cuisinart can do double duty in the backyard or at the picnic table on a summer camping trip. We haven’t tested this exact model, but we like some of the other Cuisinart grills well enough that we wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this model. See our guide to the best portable grills for some other options.

Camping and hiking deals

MSR . Habit

We tested the 4-person version of this 3-season tent from MSR and loved it. If you need more space, this 6-person tent fits the bill. Don’t let the weight intimidate you; We carried the backpack with 4 people and split the weight between 2 people and that’s not bad.

Nemo’s new Aurora Highrise hasn’t made it to our equipment lab yet for testing, but Nemo makes some of the best small, lightweight tents on the market, so we have no problem recommending this massive 13lb nylon 6-person castle . See our tent guide for some other larger and (relatively) lightweight tents.

You can never have too many bags of things, you can have too few when they are cheap. REI also discounted the 3-pack for $14 ($5 off).

Deuter Trail 26 Liter Bottle
Photo: Backcountry

Deuter’s are some of the best packs made around. I’ve had a similar daypack for five years now, and it’s still the most comfortable daypack I’ve ever owned, thanks to the mesh Aircontact system, as Deuter calls it. It allows good airflow on your back and helps you stay cool on hot days.

The Futura 28, slightly larger than the Trail, is ideal for longer day hikes, cottage trips, or as a carry-on. We didn’t test this one, but like the Trail, it features the Deuter mesh rear system, which should give you the same comfort and ventilation as the back.

Our favorite barefoot shoes are for sale at REI. Women’s sizing is also on sale for the same price. These shoes inspired me to write an entire article on barefoot shoes. Seriously, try them!

NeoAir XLite Sleeping Pillow
Photo: Backcountry

The Therm-a-Rest NeoAir sleeping bags are so small I kept losing them in my bag, but that’s a good problem. The regular size is 72 by 20 inches, weighs just one pound, and offers an R-value of 4 to help you stay warm on cold nights.

This is a solid package for trips that take a week (or longer if you’re into a very light spirit). In my testing, I stuffed my sleeping bag at the bottom with a few pieces of clothing, then crammed into a Bear Vault 500, which fits perfectly. Tie the tent poles outside, and you’ll be ready to do a couple of weeks down the road.

The Tempest is a slightly smaller version of the Talon. They make a great weekend package, but you can take advantage of the side compression straps and hold them in for a day when you don’t need all that space.

Photo: kelty

I’m in the process of testing a Kelty tarp tent, and what I can say so far is that the 9-foot version stands up well in 20-30 mph winds at the beach, which is impressive. If you plan to use it in a treeless area like the beach, be sure to pick up the poles, which are sold separately (although they don’t seem to be available everywhere at the moment).

This headlight is indestructible. I (Scott Gilbertson) have over 20 years now. Although I had to replace the tape once in that time, it works just as well as it was the day I bought it. Get some AAA rechargeable batteries, and you’ll have light for many years.

Rainier is our favorite affordable pick in our guide to the best rain jackets. They use high-quality water-repellent materials instead of the less expensive coating that many cheaper rain jackets rely on, which means they last longer and shed water better. It’s made from recycled nylon, has a vented zipper, and is attached with duct tapeā€”all features you’d rarely find in a rain jacket under $100.

Qilty Lovesite
Photo: kelty

I think WIRED Associate Editor Adrian summed up this chair well when she said, “Honestly, it’s bulky, heavy, takes up a lot of space and is hard to fold. But it’s all worth it once you’ve cramped everyone you love on it in front of a fire.”

We haven’t tested this one, but we like many other very similar Nemo chairs. This only adds to the ability to recline for some night sky viewing.

Cheap cookware is the worst. I dropped a plate of enamel on my last trip and the enamel coating shattered right off the edge. I swear I’ll buy non-perishable metal plates next time. That’s exactly what these Snow Peak Titanium boards are, and as an added bonus, they’re lightweight and perfect for backpacking too.

Add Picopresso to your cart to see the discount at checkout. If you are the type that needs For a good espresso on the road, Picopresso is our favorite portable espresso maker. It’s compact and lightweight, makes a nice cream, and is consistently good. Just don’t forget to bring a manual coffee grinder (and great fresh coffee).

climbing deals

Both EMS and REI do sales on climbing equipment. There’s a lot to list all the deals here, so we’ve just highlighted some of the highlights. Be sure to check out our EMS climbing deals and REI climbing deals page for more information. Oh, and read our Best Climbing Gear guide for other tips.

Photo: La Sportiva

This is a re-release of the classic La Sportiva Mythos climbing shoe, now made with eco-friendly materials. Note that only sizes 41-44 are available for sale.

Who doesn’t need a new chalk bag? Keep an extra in the glove box, as Alex Hanold probably does. The Black Diamond Mojo Chalk Bag is well made and will stand up to plenty of climbing, even if you’re not free solo up the big walls of the valley.

Every climber needs more cameras, and who wants to pay full price? These prices vary according to size, but they are all 25 percent off at REI.

Protect your head with one of these helmets. Black Diamond’s Half Dome helmets are designed for everything from a day on the rocks to an alpine expedition.

Kayak and stand up paddle board deals

Photo: bot

This is the best thing I’ve experienced this year. It’s hard to say exactly what’s great about him in 50 words. Let’s just say it makes the water a delight and opens up a whole new horizon of kayaking possibilities, whether you’re in the lake, the bay, or even the waves. The Breeze Aero is stable, suitable for beginners, and packs small enough to fit in your trunk.

This inflatable boat towing is a good place to start if you want to find fishing holes that no one knows about. It’s well made (still Inflatable However, watch those hooks and knives) and they can be stowed away in the back seat.

The Oru foldable kayak is another possibility for those of us who don’t have the space to store and transport boats. It’s by no means a whitewater kayak, but it weighs just 32 pounds, packs small, and folds up within minutes.
