Ultimate Camp Chair Gets a Big Upgrade: Kelty Lowdown Couch Review

Finally, a one-size-fits-all solution to owning multiple pieces of camp furniture. With the Kelty Couch, you may only need one.

As gear testers and editors, we are user First to hear about a cool new piece of gear in the pipeline. That was true of the much-anticipated announcement of the Kelty Couch. Launched in April (although stock is still trickling in for now), the Kelty Lowdown Couch is a three-person camping chair that’s an upgrade based on Kelty’s Low Loveseat Variety for two people.

Now, this low three-person sofa isn’t designed to be the lightest nor the most comfortable (although it probably is) — it’s simply the perfect piece of camp furniture. Kelty settled on the three-person magic number to accommodate a whole group of users.

In short: For over a month, we’ve taken this chair outside almost every time we go camping, to friends’ backyards, to the park, on road trips, and more. The Kelty Lowdown Couch Strongly built, with comfortable quilted fabric, and a great size.

Do you want a camping chair that can support you or your partner, your child or dogs? Kelty Couch is it.

Kelty Lowdown Couch Review

We had to wait a few months for a sample, which is really a good sign when there is a huge demand for the gear. But even before the test, we noticed how practical and cool this “sofa” can be. Combining three campfire chairs into one is genius, especially if you and your crew like to keep warm around the campfire anyway.

Kelty Couch Specifications

  • Materials: 600-denier poly canvas, powder-coated steel frame, mesh
  • Features: Adjustable armrests, two foldable insulated drink holders
  • Seats: 3+
  • Includes: Carry wrap and mat
  • Verified Weight: 20.6 lbs.

After using the sofa a few times this spring, I can say it does its job. The reclining angle and the elevation are very perfect. I also love the adjustable cup holders; They fit anything from a small insulated coffee mug to a huge Nalgene.

I also see great use scenarios at campsites, outdoor retreats, and things like watching matches or watching football matches. Really, this is great for anywhere you go out with a group and don’t want to have to pack individual seats.

Set up

One of my favorite features of this camp chair that I first noticed was the ease of setup and collapse into camp. The chair is tightly wrapped and fits in the carrying case (which is used as a floor mat for your baby or dog or picnic supplies), and is easy to open with one or two people.

When your camping trip is over or watching the sunset is over, packing is just as easy. I really appreciate that the rug keeps the chair tucked in and clean.

Once the chair opens fully, just drop it and enjoy. I think the chair is the perfect height off the floor (about 12 inches), which is a little lower than the two-person Kelty chair. The chair is divided into three “seats” – with enough space between them to be comfortable when sitting. It can support up to 600 pounds, which is more than enough (and impressive) for a camp chair designed to accommodate three adults.

that it spacious. I don’t think I’ve ever used that word to describe a camp chair, but it’s true.

Honestly, we almost can’t call this a negative, because this camp chair isn’t marketed as light — but weight is a factor. This family camping chair, which seats three, weighs 20 pounds. I carried it on several occasions (short and long distances) to push the limits of the chair.

Realistically, I wouldn’t want to carry this chair (and backpack, cooler, etc.) more than half a mile, especially if you’re carrying any other gear. But apart from that, I couldn’t fault this chair in any way.

Carrying it to a lake, to a local park, or up a trail to an established camping site – short distances to your destination – is what this chair will best suit, and probably the most common scenario anyway.

Now, in comfort when carrying: You can do a shoulder or shoulder carry, and we tried both. Shoulder carry is probably more comfortable on the arms, even though this chair is heavy. I chose to loosen the carry strap and carry the cross body so as not to strain my shoulders most of the time.

On both ends, there is a grab handle on both ends for easy carrying of two people. This is a nice addition. Kudos to Kelty for adding this feature.

Why we love it, why you should buy it

It doesn’t really matter how big your family is: two people, two people and a dog, one and a kid, two people and a kid, heck, one person and three dogs—there’s room for everyone in the Kelty Sofa.

Technically, this is a camping chair that sleeps three people. But in testing with children and pets, we’d describe this chair as over three (there’s extra room for narrowing, too).

Given the packed size, open size, and weight, this piece of camp furniture might be one of the best new hires.

The Kelty Lowdown Couch sells for $180 for an MSRP. Divided by three people (instead of buying separate chairs), this is actually a great deal for a piece of camp furniture.

If you like to keep your pets and fellow campers close by, or are looking for a versatile camp chair for your family, consider the Kelty Couch. It’s spacious, comfortable and durable – you won’t be disappointed.
